Have a Nike New Year

Ah, new years and their inspiring resolutions. Resolutions to "change the world" and renew or give birth to a better year filled with the greener pastures only dreamed about the year before.

This is usually attempted through an unbalanced diet that after 4 weeks of doing, you become a ravage savage and feast on all the "fattening" no-no's of the current health fad. Maybe it's sought within the four walls of a sweat-drenched gym or just within the confines of work. But does every new year have to start out with insane life altering rhythms? Perhaps not, but should it end in a life altering rhythm? Absolutely.

There exists for each of us a love-hate relationship with A-typical NYR's - lose weight, stay in shape, be more successful. Those are great! But I want to abolish the hate and nurture the love in those goals. The way to achieve that success is by keeping it simple. Stick to the mantra of "Just Do It"...(thanks Nike for the catch phrase...Athena herself would be proud):

Athena was, not only my favorite of the Greek Gods,  but a warrior and associated with the word "nike" which in Greek, means "Victory." A simple word with a thousand estuaries of flowing possibilities and periodic storm - victory should be like water. Often slow and steady but also insanely suffocating and challenging. Victory is how I think every new year should be viewed. For one, you made it to a new year. There are thousands of people and animals that die each day, be glad your not one of them. Victory.

Victory is seen in being given the gift of rebirth - a chance for a personal renaissance. Each day, not just for the month of January - but every morning, give yourself the space to breathe. The time to look. The energy to be an Athena is your modern day world.

Now, I know I lack the luster of an Athena figure- for one I don't have the shiny breast plate or the owl and dove fluttering about my presence. But I think that victory can be achieved in high measures by starting small.

I started small when the move to California brought with it the chance to become an artist. I'm hoping in this new year to grow that business, not necessarily in money but in talent, in challenge, and in form. To "Nike" my New Year is to not bog myself down with impossible NYR's but to simply wake up, take a breathe, look around, and begin the creative process of doing more with my life and my work than what I have.

So, here's to the New Year. May it bring suffocating challenges and a beautiful steady flow of wonderful possibility.

Christmas Time and Handmade Holidays!

I love Christmas. I love it so much that every year my husband claims I transform into some kind of crazed elf. I decorate wildly, go caroling through the house, and watch an endless stream of holiday films every night till early in the morning. Christmas this year is a little different. San Francisco is lending a holiday hand in welcoming my old traditions in a new city and helping build new ones to grow old with. This year we have a dog, we'll be spending the holiday with family, but family we've not had the pleasure of opening presents with before. I look forward to seeing Murphy (the pup) walking over our Christmas paper with bows on his head. I can't wait to bake Christmas cookies for my cousin, her husband, and their son. I'm excited to see the SF Symphony for their Christmas concert and have already indulged in walking around our neighborhood enjoying the wondrous displays of Christmas lights on old Victorian homes.

I always get nostalgic and somewhat ambitious around the holidays, as the New Year draws close. I'm looking forward to working more on Pinup, stretching my creativity to include new designs, new ideas, and new pursuits.

Within those pursuits, I want to grow my style and my business. It's so important to be conscious of your local economy and the joy there is in buying/giving something that is handmade. There is nothing better than buying something that I know another artist spent time, talent, and persnickety nature in creating/designing their product. I know what goes into my work and as a thank you to all my customers, I like to be a customer for other artists. Part of being an artist is supporting the arts.

So this year, enjoy your holidays. Buy handmade. And continue to enjoy traditions new and old. Merry Christmas!

The New Etsy App!

(download)

Hi, my name is Kaylin. I am an artist and I have an addiction to Etsy.

...and they just made my addiction stronger by creating a great, well thought out, easy to use app. Awesome! So now I can spend money on the go but also take care of my Etsy shop on the go as well.

As someone who believes in the power of social media and uses it as often as possible, the fact that Etsy has recently not only integrated Twitter and Facebook notifications into every-day shop maintenance but now has an app, makes me über happy! I've been waiting for an Etsy app and was stoked when the tweet came through today of its debut.

So far, so great. Below are some screen shots taken of me using the app both for shop maintenance and browsing goods. It's as user friendly and downright clean and pretty as their website.

If you enjoy Etsy or are a proponent of handmade happiness, check out their new app! I, for one, have used it a lot today. Lol

Holidays and Treasuries

One of the fun things about being on Etsy is creating and being included in artist/customer curated treasuries! Treasuries are a great way to find good gift ideas or as inspiration.

I've been lucky enough to be included in some beautiful treasuries and thought I'd take a minute to share them with you! There are so many talented artists out there and this is an excellent way of showcasing their wares! Maybe this will inspire you to buy handmade this holiday season, maybe it'll inspire an idea for a new room, or maybe it'll give you a sense of nostalgia. Nostalgia for that old woolen hat you wore as kid. Or for that warm cup of hot chocolate that healed your hurt feelings. Maybe even the sense of bewilderment and excitement. Who knows?

Enjoy!

Here are some of the treasuries I've curated!

New Junk to turn into Treasure!

There are many things in this life I enjoy. Chief among them is getting my hands dirty from sorting and digging through bins of broken bobs, this and thats, jewels, pieces, etc. You never know what awesomeness is to come out of it!

So tonight's glowing pride and joy is me...chillin' on my carpet, sitting Indian style, carefully inspecting new pieces for new work. What a fabulous way to spend a Monday evening...not to mention my go between channels of Sci-Fi and then Sex and the City on TBS. Confused? You aren't the first. Haha enjoy!

Hart Middle School Craft Fair and Pancake Breakfast

This weekend brings fun times at Hart Middle School! It's my last art fair of the month and I'm looking forward to being a part of this fun event. Sunday morning, I'll be there with my signature brooches and necklaces. However, I am also bringing some new items - a couple bright, fun paintings great for a kids room, some colorful Christmas ornaments, and some new designs of hair wear for girls. So fun!

Located in Pleasanton, California - Hart Middle School is holding a pancake breakfast and craft fair in an effort to support the school band, bring together the community, and share a little holiday shopping and arts! The fair begins at 8:00 Sunday morning, bright and early, and ends at 1:00. I'd love to see you there! Come shop. Come visit. Come support the musical endeavors and education of the arts through purchasing the arts via the artists,  the raffle (with lotsa crafty goodies!), or by gobbling up some deliciouso pancakes. Yummmmm!

I leave you with this one thought: Pancakes.

Custom Orders

I've been fortunate enough in the last few days to receive requests for custom orders! These are always so fun! I adore working on a special piece for a special someone or as of late, for a special day like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries.

Below are some pictures from a recently completed custom order. Made for the bride, this necklace features the requested blue accents, lace, beading, and a beautiful flower made from baby blue vintage trim. I had a great time working with my client, putting our creative noggins together to create the perfect wedding accessory.

If anyone is interested in requesting a custom order, message me at my shop! I can't wait to get started on another item.

Enjoy!

Innovative Ideas

As I've been working at the art desk today, I was looking about our apartment and realized how good innovative ideas are crucial to living in a small space. Here's four ideas that have helped us:

1) Over the weekend, me and the Mr. put together a storage bed after deciding that the large-bulky-under-bed drawer units were a) super spendy and b) too large for a tiny apartment such as our own. To alleviate the stress on our wallet and ensure storage in our home, we built this bed using a cheap IKEA frame and 10 15 X 15 storage cubes found on Amazon. Pretty cool right?

2) A few yard sales ago, I bought this necklace stand for displaying my handiwork at art shows and stores. However, found I liked it better as a way to hang business cards instead of necklaces. For me, since I make jewelry, being able to "string" my business card to a necklace, a brooch, or a hair clip, having a corner with a punched hole can be useful. Therefore, this necklace tree turned card display, cost me all of $4. Awesome.

3) I love coffee. I call it my "instant human" formula. It's soothing. It's rich. And it's often the reason I wake up in the morning. But in the process of our moving/buying/restyling our apartment, we haven't bought/made coasters yet. I know, I know...some of you may not mind the round drip circles on your furniture, but I am OCD enough to feel that coasters are as important as underwear. Therefore, in the absence of coasters (not a predictament I plan to be in for long), I used this jelly jar lid to protect my coffee mug from my desktop. (I'm strangely imaging a war between mug and desk...I think I watch too much Sci-fi and/or Animated movies....). Who was it who said "Necessity creates Innovation?"

4) Yesterday, we went to The Container Store (cue angels singing) and were in search of a better way to organize my growing multitude of recycled pieces for jewelry design. Before, I had drawer units and table-top containers for storage. But, in an effort to clear up some space, I wanted to put everything in my desk drawers. So, what some women use for makeup (really?), I'm using for jewelry pieces. Fabulous and totally easy, organized by color. Yay!

These are only a few of thousands of great ideas. What helps you stay organized and sane in your home? If you'd like to see what is currently happening at the shop, check out PinupBrooches Enjoy!

San Francisco Zine Fest

I know, I know....I'm rrreeeaaaallly late in posting this but September passed by so fast, I ran out of time. But alas! It is better late than never and I'd love to share some photo's from the S.F. Zine Fest.

I was welcomed to join the Calico Umbrella Collective at their booth during the Zine Fest. The event was such a fun one and I loved meeting some new people, including Liz Brent of , Megan, and Rachel - all wonderful artists and people! Both Liz and Megan had new zines and hosted a forum about Time Management for the artist. They had a good sized group of artists to discuss productivity and time-management skills, offering up their own experiences and ideas on how to keep the creativity flowing.

Overall, the festival was great and I had an awesome time meeting these new talented artists and talking with the many wonderful visitors of the festival.

Asheville and Family

Over the last week, Jason and I went to Asheville, NC. We were in town for a family emergency and even those are never fun, it is always a delight to see my family who all live on the east coast.

I grew up in Asheville and over the years, it has really grown both as a tourist location and in resident size. Nestled in the blue ridge mountains, it is a small town city that hosts beautiful places like The Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn, the NC Arboretum, the Framers Market. Also the countless mountain trails for hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, and practically any outdoors activity of interest. Between the outdoors and the historical attractions, Asheville is host to many great artists and wonderful foods. It's hard to be in town and not be inspired.

So, since I am back in beautiful San Francisco and practically worried sick over my family, I admit to missing a bit of home. What better time to share some photo's of my hometown. Enjoy!
